The Surgical Outcomes Research Centre (SOuRCe) was established in 2002 as a not-for-profit conjoint academic surgical research unit of the Sydney Local Health District and The University of Sydney. Headed by Professor Michael Solomon (Colorectal Surgeon at RPAH and Professor of Surgical Research with the University of Sydney), the primary goal of SOuRCe is to “promote an evidence-based approach to improve clinical practice and to achieve the best possible outcomes for patients”.

Covering all surgical specialties, SOuRCe has established and continues to develop a renowned research profile of surgical outcomes research. Our work includes developing and improving new surgical techniques, enhancing quality of life and patient-reported outcomes, and implementing evidence-based practice.

SOuRCe is a part of the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney. Explore more research within our faculty.

Over the past 22 years, there have been many achievements of which we are particularly proud:

Notaras Scholarships: Established in 2003 following a generous donation by Dr Mitchell J Notaras and in collaboration with The University of Sydney, the SLHD and the Training Board of Colorectal Surgery of the Colorectal Surgical Society Australasia, SOuRCe has provided clinical training and higher degree supervision to 9 surgeons.

National and International Collaborations: Including innovative surgical clinical trials methodology (>70 RCTs) and involvement of over 1000 collaborators.

Pioneering Measures of Patient Choice: Including patient preference studies, equipoise, decision aids and surgical quality of life measures, featured in over 100 publications.

Research Impact: Historically amounting to >$30M in competitive funding including major national and international funding bodies, >700 publications, 22 books, supervision of >70 higher degree students and >50 MD students.

The centre continues its wide range of activities across funded surgical programs including Advanced Gastrointestinal Surgical Program (Pelvic Exenteration, Peritoneal Malignancy, Retroperitoneal Sarcoma and Advanced Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery), Robotics Program, Orthopaedic Surgery, Vascular Surgery and other collaborations with individuals of a wide range of surgical specialties and institutions in Australia and abroad.
